Obesity - No Easy Fixes

Daily Reports continue to warn of the obesity crisis.

This situation is no surprise to us at Life Education. As the UK’s largest children’s health education charity, our educators are in daily contact with primary school children, teaching them early on, the value of a healthy diet and active lifestyle. We know how important it is to reach children while they are still young. Research from our corporate sponsor BUPA shows that overweight children tend to grow up into overweight adults. They then run a significantly higher risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, amongst other serious illnesses.

If the government is to achieve its target to stem the rise in childhood obesity (for under 11 year olds) by 2010, we still have very far to go. If we are to stand any hope of meeting this target, we need first to stop the culture of blame and knee jerk reactions in response to this. Attempts to reform the attitudes of parents, shame the fast food industry into changing its menus or simply enforcing change to meals provided by schools to healthy options are bound to fail. What we need are policies and practice that recognise children’s ability to make their own health choices given the collective support of those that have responsibility for their health and well-being.

If children see us blaming each other for our inconsistent messages, they will remain confused rather than helped.
