About us - What we do
Our
Mission
Our mission is to help children make healthy choices through our work with schools, parents and their communities.
Our Work with Children
Life Education is the UK's largest children's health education charity, providing a comprehensive range of high quality and evidence-based services appropriate to the needs of primary school children. Our specially trained Educators have a number of ways of working with schools and different year groups – from a visit by our own mobile classroom to exciting interactive activities specially designed to work in the school's own facilities.
For each class group we construct a session that is appropriate to the pupils’ age and needs. These are delivered by Life Education’s own specially-trained Educators using a life-skills approach so that each year children increase their knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed health choices. Topics covered include: how the body works, the importance of healthy diet and exercise, safe use of medicines, the risks of tobacco, alcohol and non-prescription drugs and emotional wellbeing (including bullying.)
Emphasis is placed on teaching in a fun and interactive manner using music, sound and light effects as well as interactive technology and Life Education’s life-sized illuminated model of the human body. Click for more detail or Case Studies.
Positive teaching strategies
Our Educators are trained in a range of positive techniques and behaviour management strategies, which have been refined over many years, in close consultation with expert educational practitioners.
These are used throughout our sessions to support the development of critical thinking, positive attitudes, communication and assertiveness skills, in addition to knowledge and understanding of the human body and subject matter that provides an understanding of how to make positive health choices.

Our Services in Schools
We build on schools’ existing PSHE provision by tailoring our visits to achieve learning outcomes agreed with teachers in pre-visit sessions. Our work evolves in response to emerging policy and good practice for PSHE, Citizenship Education and work with parents. The content of all our sessions is mapped against the curriculum frameworks and policy guidance of the countries in which we operate and other policy guidance documents that relate to delivering healthy outcomes for all children, such as Healthy School Status. Involving Parents
Research shows the value and importance of parental involvement in children’s learning and Life Education offers a number of approaches that support this. These include a brief introduction to our work during the visit of a mobile classroom; a vibrant Parent Assembly Programme and Parenting Skills courses for those who would like more intensive support and guidance. For schools that want to develop their own ability to offer more support to parents, we offer training for school-based staff ,such as Parental Support Advisors so they can deliver the programmes we have designed and tested. Involving the Community
Our work is most effective when integrated with other community-based initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of children and young people. This is why each of our local groups endeavours to work in partnership with the local business community, the media and with local voluntary and statutory partners.
Praise for Life Education
Life Education’s work has been praised by Ofsted, Sure Start and the DCSF as well as health practitioners such as Lord Robert Winston. Life Education also receives regular positive feedback from Head Teachers, Community Trusts and parents alike.
"All sorts of medical research now shows that what you start with in life is very important and that influence and environment is crucial. Education for children at an early age is vital, to help them adopt the right healthy habits, so that their health later on is going to be as good as possible. That’s why I think the work of Life Education is so important"
